Filamentous cyanobacteria Anabaena (Nostoc) sp. PCC7120 growing on medium with no combined nitrogen source. Under these conditions, cells (heterocysts) specialized in fixing atmospheric nitrogen differentiate. Heterocysts are observed at semiregular intervals as cells larger than the rest of the cells of the filament (vegetative cells).
